Weekly Writing Challenge: A Few of My Favorite Things

When people visit my home they usually notice a picture painted by my grandfather of a mountain scene. It is a very beautiful picture but I have another picture received from an aunt years ago. The picture is a windmill scene in the Netherlands. It is seems to be painted from a overcast day but many days are rainy in the part of the world.

My great-grandparents on my grandmothers side and grandfather all came from the Netherlands. My grandmother’s family moved from Winschoten, Netherlands before my grandmother was born. My great grandmother grew up in Bellingwolde, Netherlands which is a small village very close to the German border. From what I have been told this painting is from a windmill very close to the village along the canal.

Someday I wold like to see it myself but for now I will just enjoy the scene from my desk.

  1. I like the windmill painting. It is a great reminder of your family history.

  2. Wonderful connection between the painting and your family. Paintings can be magical in the way they can transport our thoughts to another time and place.
